Therapy for Relationship & Dating Difficulties

If you find relationships confusing, exhausting or painful, you are not alone. For many adults, the difficulties they experience in relationships, whether in dating, long-term partnerships or family dynamics, trace back to patterns formed long before the relationship began.

When Relationships Feel Harder Than They Should

Most relationship difficulties are not really about the other person. They are about what we bring to relationships: the expectations, fears and ways of connecting we developed in response to our earliest experiences.

If you grew up in an environment where love felt conditional, unpredictable or absent, your nervous system learned to adapt. Those adaptations show up in adult relationships as anxiety, avoidance, people-pleasing, jealousy, conflict or an inability to let people in, even when you want to.

Patterns That May Feel Familiar

Repeating the same relationship patterns with different people
Fear of abandonment or rejection, even in stable relationships
Feeling emotionally disconnected from partners
Difficulty trusting others or letting people get close
Staying in relationships that feel wrong out of fear of being alone
Intense anxiety around dating or meeting new people
People-pleasing or losing yourself in relationships
Conflict that escalates quickly or feels impossible to resolve
These patterns make sense. They were built for a reason. With the right support, they can change.

Relationships, Dating and Childhood Trauma

Research consistently shows that the way we attach in childhood directly shapes the way we relate to others as adults. If your early caregivers were inconsistent, emotionally unavailable or frightening, you may have developed an insecure attachment style that plays out in every close relationship you have.

This is especially relevant in dating. Many adults find that despite genuinely wanting a healthy relationship, they are drawn to the familiar, which often means people who recreate the emotional dynamics of their childhood. Understanding this is not about blame. It is one of the most freeing things therapy can offer.

Areas We Can Work On Together

Repeating Relationship Patterns

Understanding why you keep arriving at the same place in relationships, and what needs to shift at a deeper level.

Dating Anxiety

Exploring the fears, self-doubt and nervous system responses that make dating feel overwhelming or emotionally exhausting.

Trust and Betrayal

Working through the impact of broken trust, whether from a partner, parent or friend, and rebuilding your sense of safety in relationships.

Co-dependency and Boundaries

Understanding unhealthy relationship dynamics and developing a clearer sense of your own needs, limits and self-worth.

Communication and Conflict

Learning to express yourself clearly and navigate disagreement without shutting down or escalating.

Emotional Connection

Rebuilding or deepening intimacy when emotional distance has become a pattern in your relationship.

Understanding the pattern is the first step to changing it.

How Therapy Helps

Relationship therapy with me is not about analysing your partner or assigning blame. It is about understanding yourself: how you were shaped by your early experiences, what you need from relationships and what has been getting in the way.

I work with individuals, not couples, using an attachment-focused, trauma-informed approach. We explore the roots of your relationship patterns, how they developed and how they are showing up in your life now. Many clients find that once they understand the pattern, they have a real choice about whether to continue it.
