Therapy for Parents & Carers of Children with Complex Needs
Caring for a child with complex needs can be one of the most isolating experiences there is. You love your child completely, and yet some days that love is not enough to protect you from the exhaustion, the guilt, and the quiet grief of a parenting experience that looks nothing like you imagined.
You Are Not Alone in This
I know this because I have lived it. For over 20 years I was a specialist foster carer, parenting children with severe attachment difficulties, trauma, complex physical health conditions and a range of additional needs including ASD, ADHD, ODD and ARFID. I experienced burnout. I experienced compassion fatigue. I reached points where I questioned everything.
That experience is now central to how I work with parents and carers. I do not come to this from theory alone. I come to it from the inside, which means I understand in a way that most therapists simply cannot.
What Brings Parents and Carers to Therapy
If you are caring for a child with trauma, attachment difficulties or complex needs, some of these may feel familiar:
What We Work On Together
Understanding Your Child's Behaviour
Looking through an attachment and trauma lens rather than a behavioural one. When we understand what a child's behaviour is communicating, everything shifts.
Managing Burnout and Compassion Fatigue
Practical and emotional strategies to prevent and recover from the depletion that comes with high-demand caregiving.
Restoring Your Sense of Self
Reconnecting with who you are beyond your role as a parent or carer, and rebuilding self-worth that isn't dependent on your child's progress.
Your Own Childhood and Parenting Patterns
Exploring how you were parented and how that shapes your reactions, beliefs and relationship with your child, often in ways we are not conscious of.
Connection and Attunement
Learning how to stay present and connected with a child who pushes you away, understanding what they need even when their behaviour says otherwise.
Self-Compassion and Guilt
Working through the resentment, guilt and shame that caring for a child with complex needs can bring, without judgement.
An Attachment and Trauma Lens
Most parenting support takes a behavioural approach: manage the behaviour, apply the strategy, follow the steps. In my experience, this rarely reaches the root of what is happening for children with complex trauma or attachment difficulties.
When we look at a child's behaviour through an attachment and trauma lens, we ask different questions. Not "how do I stop this?" but "what does my child need to feel safe?" That shift in perspective changes everything, both for the child and for the parent carrying the weight of trying to help them.

I am a mum, a former specialist foster carer and a trained integrative psychotherapist. I have sat exactly where you are sitting.
